Reply to an Article in "The Telegraph" by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard of 24th July 2019:
"My advice to comrade Boris: never, ever, try to bluff the EU"
By Christian Heinze, 24th July 2019.
The Article by Evans-Pritchard to be found in an online edition of "The Telegraph" points to
the necessity of Brexit to happen sooner or later as a result of the Maastricht Agreement
(or of its application) as it opened the way for a misuse of the EURO and for an inadequate
scope of authority of the European Court of Justice. The following is the comment I sent
to the author:
Sir,
as a true believer in European Union I am afraid one must admit that your advice to Boris
Johnson of 24th July 2019 concerning Brexit including its reasoning is most valid. In my
view, however, one important point is missing not only in your advice but in British
thinking at large: A European Union to speak of needs the United Kingdom as a member. And
the United Kingdom itself needs this membership in the long run while remaining strongly
allied with but not exclusively depending upon the USA. The United Kingdom is predestined
for a role in the European Union similar to that of France, Italiy and Germany. England
should therefore formulate and declare clear basic conditions under which it would remain
in or rejoin the EU, and it should have started to name them decades ago. Not that there
was a chance of their acceptance at the present moment of prevailing Eurocracy, but
because they would mark the direction which the EU must follow from the necessary reforms
onwards.
Sincerely
Christian Heinze
